Course Details

This course explores the cultural, scientific, and historical impact of the later Roman Empire by exploring its second capital of Constantinople (modern Istanbul). Key sites such as Hagia Sophia, the Istanbul Archaeology Museum, the Theodosian Walls, and Chora Church, will be visited along with others. At the conclusion of the online course and the study trip to Istanbul, students will be expected to complete a research project based on their observations and experiences on the tour. The tour itself is scheduled for May 10-18, 2015. In addition to the online course work, students will are expected to attend preparatory meetings prior to departure for Istanbul. Please note that the cost of the tour is not covered by tuition. Contact the Center for Global Engagement (412-397-2151) for additional information. Section will be taught totally online with no scheduled class meetings. Students must arrange for daily access to a computer and the Internet prior to the start of classes. Robert Morris labs are to be used only as a backup in special situations and may not be relied upon for extended periods of time. In addition to the Internet link, online classes have a large emphasis on email.
