HNRS3970 - Under Mushroom Cloud
Spring 2024
This seminar will examine two essential elements of the Cold War: 1) the development of the atomic bomb and the ensuing nuclear arms race, and 2) how sport and other soft power tools were used by both the Eastern and Western blocs as tools of propaganda. A key point of emphasis will be on how the development of atomic weapons affected American society, media, and culture.
Unlike a non-honors course, additional time and emphasis will be spent analyzing broadcasts, primary source material, and historical scenarios. The objective will be to draw upon the multidisciplinary strengths of the honors student participants to bring multiple perspectives to the examination of this critical period.
