Summer 2013 This course is an exploration of the general principles and problems of modern governments. Students examine the role of government in the social process, the nature and development of political organization, the relationship of the state to society, and the search for a just balance between freedom and authority. The course involves an examination of comparative governments and political theory as appropriate to the United States, Great Britain, France, West Germany, the Soviet Union, mainland China, and others which may be selected. POLS2020 - Criminal Law and Evidence
Summer 2013 This course is a basic introduction to the judicial process, with specific emphasis on federal criminal procedure. Students will learn the methods that the government uses to detect, investigate, apprehend, prosecute, convict, and punish criminals. It will cover the most common crimes prosecuted in American courts, including homicide, sexual assault, and theft, and common defenses, including insanity and self-defense. The course will first give an overview of criminal law and the American court system, and will then proceed to go through the constitutional provisions of criminal procedure chronologically as they occur in real life. The criminal justice system depends on the successful handling of evidence, and the last part of the course will emphasize the rules for the admissibility of evidence and the safeguards the Constitution provides for criminal defendants. 3 Credits |

POLS3020 - The Constitution
Summer 2013 This course examines the origins and development of our nation's basic law, the Constitution of the United States of America. It blends the historical, legal and philosophical perspectives on our country's founding document, beginning with the intellectual and historical background through the drafting of the Constitution. Topics to be covered in the first part of the course include: the convention debates, the contributions of the framers, the ratification debates, and the Federalist and Anti-Federalist Papers. This is followed with the historical development of political practices under the Constitution and various theories of the Constitution. The last section of the class provides an examination of various areas of Constitutional Law. 3 Credits |

POLS3030 - The American Presidency
Summer 2013 This course is an overview of the institution of the presidency in U.S. political history. It will begin with the constitutional foundations, including a discussion of the debate at the Philadelphia convention and ratification. It will then move through American Political history and, building on the constitutional origins of the presidency, consider the development of the institution into its modern-day form, with the relationship of the executive branch to the other two branches of government as a major theme. The transformations made by George Washington, Andrew Jackson, Theordore Roosevelt and Franklin Roosevelt will be highlighted. The modern presidency will be a major section of the course, with an emphasis on the rise of the rhetoricl presidency. Both the public law paradigm and presidential power approach to studying the presidency will be covered. The importance and impact of the nomination and election process will be dealt with, as well as the organization of the White House and Executive Branch. Prerequisite: HIST1100, HIST1200 or POLS1020 3 Credits |

POLS4050 - Israel: Cultures and Contexts
Summer 2013 This course is a study abroad program to the State of Israel. The course will meet during the spring semester before departure, for the students to learn about the history and current political situation of Israel, and to prepare them for what they will encounter on their visit. An online course shell will be utilized to familiarize students with Israeli news sources, logistical and cultural issues, and other educational resources. In country, various sites will be visited, including: Tel Aviv, Jaffa, Jerusalem, the Galilee, and Nazareth. Other sites might include: Haifa, Akko, and Masada. 3 Credits |
