Hockey FAQ

Will RMU be rejoining the Atlantic Hockey Association (men’s) and the College Hockey America (women’s) conferences?

The Atlantic Hockey Association and College Hockey America Commissioner has been made aware of today’s announcement. RMU will have to officially apply for reinstatement and will look to provide an update on conference affiliation once a determination has been made.

Will the former players who remained enrolled at RMU be rejoining the team?

RMU is committed to honoring the scholarships for all hockey student-athletes that chose to remain at RMU, through the completion of their degree. Decisions regarding the official rosters will be at the discretion of the head coaches. However, the Athletics Compliance Office has already begun exploring options for extensions of eligibility and will work directly with the NCAA and each student-athlete who wished to return, to ensure that they can maximize their remaining seasons of competition.

Are former hockey student-athletes able/eligible to return?

Decisions regarding future rosters are at the discretion of the head coaches. Student-athletes that transferred away from RMU for the 2021-22 season are reminded that they must enter the NCAA Transfer Portal prior to conversations with RMU coaching staff regarding their possible return. Student-athletes who intend to return to RMU may contact Athletics Compliance with questions regarding their remaining eligibility and potential clock extensions.

Will the teams play at the RMU Island Sports Center?

RMU is interested in exploring all options but the men’s and women’s hockey programs are tentatively planning to return to the Island Sports Center for the 2023-24 season.

Why will teams not be returning for the 2022-23 season?

RMU will use the next year as an opportunity for the coaches to recruit a team for the 2023-24 season so that when the programs do return they have the opportunity to be as successful as possible once returning to play.

Who will be the head coaches?

Derek Schooley will return as Head Coach of the Men’s Hockey program. A national search will be conducted to identify the next Head Coach for Women’s Hockey.

What will happen to club ice hockey teams?

RMU will continue to offer four club ice hockey teams, including a women’s team, which compete at the RMU Island Sports Center.
