  • The Department of Sport Management and School of Business hosted the 16th RMU Sport Management Student Career Summit at the UPMC Events Center last Friday. More than 210 students and faculty representing 45 universities from 15 states registered for the summit along with 80 industry professionals/speakers representing 70 organizations. The summit featured a pre-summit professional development workshop on Thursday evening for current RMU students along with an evening team building/networking event with the students and industry professionals. Friday's main event featured a Super Panel led by RMU President Chris Howard, with Bill Daly, deputy commissioner of the NHL; Michelle D. Johnson; senior vice president and head of referee operations for the NBA; and Stan Wilcox, NCAA executive vice president of regulatory affairs. Bill Sutton, former sport management professor at RMU was recognized for his contributions to the sport industry and education. RMU Sport Management alumni Jim Popovich '94 and Justin Powers '08 were inducted into the RMU Sport Management Hall of Fame.
  • Four students will represent RMU at the regional competition of the America 250 PA Innovation Challenge today at Point Park University. Endorsed by Governor Tom Wolf, the competition is organized by Wilkes-Barre Connect and the U.S. Postal Service and calls for student teams from universities and colleges across Pennsylvania to develop an integrated marketing strategy that represents the legacy of the state in commemoration of the 250th birthday of the United States. Students involved include:
    • Juliet Adams - history
    • Erik Schmidt - media arts
    • Draven Marino - communications and political science
    • Victoria Volk - marketing
  • Justin Papa, a senior mechanical engineering major, has been selected to attend the Italian Technology Awards Program next month in Italy. Papa and his referring RMU faculty member have been awarded a one week trip and will have the opportunity to visit top Italian Companies, take part in an advanced education program at the International Center of Research in International Management of Milan, along with a number of cultural and academic activities and workshops. 

Personal Mention

  • Ed Karshner, associate professor of English, has a chapter published in the book Appalachian Reckoning: A Region Responds to Hillbilly Elegy. His chapter is titled "These Stories Sustain Me: The Wyrd-ness of my Appalachia,” and the book can be found here.
  • Sushma Mishra, associate professor of computer and information systems, was a speaker at the UPMC Women in IT speaker series last week. Her talk, titled "STEM+C Career Paths: Where are the girls?" highlighted the underrepresentation of women in IT.
  • Ben Campbell, associate professor of engineering, serves as an elected official on the Pine-Richland School Board. The PASA-PSBA School Leadership Conference awarded the Pine-Richland School Board the "Pennsylvania Education Innovation Award." The board was selected for serving as role models for the district in a manner in which they provide strategic plan oversight and engagement. They were also touted for their governance model, which was captured in a 2019 conference presentation "The Pursuit of Excellence: Leadership and Governance."

  • Before the Creepy Conference, join Monica VanDieren, director of the university Honors Program and university professor of mathematics, at the Creepy Honors Roundtable from11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. in Franklin 204. She takes listeners on an eerie journey through levels of infinity to uncover the Banach-Tarski Paradox...proof that self-replicating gremlins, tribbles, etc. could one day populate the world.
  • The Center for Documentary Production and Study and the Department of Media Arts in the School of Informatics, Humanities and Social Sciences will host MoonDocs® 2019 - The 3rd Annual Documentary Filmmakers’ Open House in the Wheatley Center on November 1-2. Students, faculty and staff are welcome to register, network, and explore a variety of panels, workshops and presentations with industry leaders on the process of making documentary films, including a masterclass on “Building Your Career as a Filmmaker and How to Use Festivals to Make Your Name” with RMU’s fall 2019 visiting documentary filmmaker Eva Weber.   • The Center for Veterans & Military Families is hosting a panel discussion, "Helping Veterans Establish a Path to Development, Advancement, and Promotion in the Civilian Workplace" ​on November 18 from 8 - 10 a.m. in Yorktown Hall. RSVP here by November 8.
