This course is designed to provide an understanding of criminal behavior and antisocial behavior from a cross-disciplinary viewpoint. A multi-disciplinary review of criminal behavior allows students to learn and appreciate criminal behavior from different perspectives and optics. Contemporary research theory and practice concerning the psychology of crime will be explored. Students will learn about the factors associated with the onset and maintenance of antisocial and criminal behavior to include juvenile offending. Because some criminal behavior begins early antisocial conduct in juveniles is covered in detail although the great majority of juveniles who offend also stop before reaching adulthood. The course will also discuss biological aspects of crime which may serve as predisposition for criminal behavior as well as issues related to environmental and peer influence. It provides the applied components of criminal behavioral investigative analysis from operational aspects such as the formation of the investigative team predicting criminal behavior locating offenders and methodically analyzing crime scene elements to aid investigators. Offender typology and victimology will be discussed at length. Moreover the student will learn other practical applications such as interview techniques for suspects crime victims and how to minimize occurrences of false confessions.
