This course focuses on research and principles of reading in different content areas. Specifically it addresses the disciplinary literacy from a linguistic perspective to work with reading in the content for all students including Multilingual Learners (MLs). The course covers the language and culture of MLs differences between academic language and conversational language disciplinary literacy and challenges for content area teachers English language development and Second Language Acquisition. The course also addresses effective reading strategies in each discipline including science mathematics social studies and English language arts. Students will have the opportunity to design a lesson plan that effectively demonstrates reading strategies covered in the course to meet the academic needs of all students including MLs. Credits: 3Course Prerequisite(s): Course Co-requisite: EDUC 0640 If you are registered for this course and you are also currently enrolled in a teacher certification program then you must also be registered for the co-requisite course EDUC0640. In addition carefully read Appendix D: For Teacher Candidates Only at the end of the syllabus. Note that if you are seeking an MS degree in Instructional Leadership and are already a certified teacher or you are not seeking teacher certification along with your MS degree then you are not required to register for and complete the co-requisite course EDUC0640.
