This course enables students to study the historical growth philosophical premises and literary techniques of important writers in American literature from the Civil War to today with emphasis on the modern period. Students read a wide diverse range of literature including minority literatures especially the immigrant experience. Students also study genres such as fiction poetry journals and autobiographies and aesthetic movements such as realism naturalism and modernism. Students investigate print internet resources and electronic databases and write literacy research essays in MLA format. Prerequisites: CSCM1030 (COSK2220) and any ELIT course
