This course provides students with the opportunity to develop their skills in writing fiction. Working from story premise to publication students will learn to generate story ideas plan draft review peers? work and use revision and editing techniques. Students will also be introduced to the business of writing through a thorough discussion of the literary ecosystem including understanding submission calls magazine mastheads; writing cover and query letters and author bios; researching literary journals; tracking submissions; and managing rejection. Students will be instructed on the business of publishing with topics including: the editorial process serial publishing and community building. This course emphasizes the effective reading of mentor texts as examples of craft technique. In addition to classroom assignments students will be encouraged to submit at least one piece of original fiction to a journal of their choosing.3 CreditsCourse Prerequisites: ENGL3020
