During this course we will be examining the causes of the First World War as well as its technological cultural and political significance for modern world history. As an upper-level class the types of assignments presuppose a basic familiarity with modern world history as well as previous experience with historical research work.Please note that while this is a military history course we will be examining the human experience of the war both on the battlefield and beyond it. Our goal is to explore the decisions and cultural groundwork that led to the outbreak of the war as well as its physical and psychological impact. In terms of your development as a scholar the main objectives of the class are to enrich your research capabilities your skill at writing thoughtful and informative historical work and your aptitude for public speaking while presenting your findings.3 Credits
