This course deals with the social intellectual political and economic forces which have shaped the American character in the 20th century. Emphasis is given to reform movements and to the assumption and implications of America's big power status. American Puritanism the American Enlightenment the romantic era and the intellectual revolution are considered as well as general examination of conservatism liberalism and radicalism in modern America. This course is usually offered only in the fall term.3 Credits
