At the end of HNRS 4900 a student submits a thesis proposal (literature review and research plan). This proposal is reviewed by the Honors Administration and the Faculty Advisor listed on the proposal. Upon approval the student can enroll in HNRS 4911 and/or HNRS 4912. The proposal serves as the syllabus for the student. The proposal contains a problem statement abstract timeline proposed methods and proposed deliverables. The thesis project is comprised of 3 total credits of course work (HNRS 4911 and HNRS 4912). The HNRS 4911 1-credit course and HNRS 4912 2-credit course are designed to provide seniors an opportunity to conduct a semester or longer research project. These two courses can be taken together or separately (in any order). Since HNRS 4911 and 4912 create one project faculty supervising HNRS 4911 separately should determine an interim deliverable in order to assign a grade at the end of the semester with the final project graded at the conclusion of HNRS 4912. If HNRS 4912 precedes HNRS 4911 a similar interim deliverable should be defined by the Faculty Advisor. Prior to HNRS 4911/12 students will develop propose and have approved a substantial project that expands upon an idea or explores a problem beyond what was covered in their academic coursework. During HNRS 4911/12 students will complete this pre-approved project using academic sources in an appropriate academic style or using other discipline-and-project-appropriate methods. After HNRS 4911/12 students will present their project at either the Robert Morris University Undergraduate Research Conference or another pre-approved conference or venue.
