Maria Satira ‘12

“Knowing that I have the opportunity now financially to give back and make a difference for a student means the world to me, because I was in that position once too as a student.”

After several years as a local TV newscaster, Maria Satira ‘12 switched careers last year to become marketing and communications director of the Greenville-Eastern North Carolina Alliance. Having double-majored in media arts and communication at RMU provided her with writing and storytelling skills that suit her new role encouraging businesses to grow in her region just as well as they did when she sat behind the anchor desk.

Another college experience helped Maria to develop her confidence working with other leaders and executives. As a student representative on the RMU reaccreditation team, Maria took on the task of one-on-one interviews with the university president and the chairman of the board of trustees.

The Murrysville native is committed to giving back and helping others. She and her husband, Drew, are devoted to their two rescue dogs, and she serves on the board of the Humane Society of Eastern Carolina. With her President’s Council gift, Maria supports a scholarship honoring Amanda Werkmeister, her former sorority sister.

“I want to make a difference.”

“The teaching certification program aligns so well with the master’s program that I only had to take a few additional classes to obtain my master’s degree. It seemed almost foolish not to do it.”
