  • Five media arts majors received accolades for their short films and documentaries this past summer and fall:
    • Senior Emily Swenglish's, "The Light Wraps You" will be screened at Anthology Film Archives in the Women's Directors, Young Filmmaker's category
    • Sophomore honors student Karoline Betteridge's short horror film, "He Follows" was screened at the S.O.S Indie Horror Film Festival
    • Regan Check's short documentary, "A Real Boy" was a semi-finalist in the Newark International Youth Film Festival
    • Recent grads Jay Shaffer and Aaron Krol's documentary, "One Too Many," was awarded Merit in the Global Shorts International Online Film Competition in Los Angeles.
  • The United Way campaign is officially underway. Donate online or learn more about the upcoming events and weekly opportunities for employees, including receiving tickets for a chance to win a signed Sidney Crosby hockey glove and many basket raffles on November 15 at our Thank You Reception, by visiting rmu.edu/unitedway.  
  • The Tristate Energy and Advanced Manufacturing (TEAM) Consortium announced that the group received three new grants totaling one million dollars. RMU is an educational partner, alongside CCBC, CCAC, West Virginia Northern Community College, and Pierpont Community and Technical College. The organization is a multi-state, multi-industry effort striving to bridge the gap between the lack of STEM graduates and the workforce shortage in energy and advanced manufacturing. 
  • The RMU Club Golf team has won both of the NCCGA Atlantic Regional Tournaments this semester, earning them a bid to compete for the NCCGA national championship in Myrtle Beach this November.

  • Christine Holtz, professor of media arts, has been elected president of the board of directors of Pittsburgh Filmmakers and Pittsburgh Center for the Arts, a nonprofit community visual arts organization.

Events

  • The Massey Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation, in collaboration with Student Life, announces, "The Nak'd Thread Vintage Pop Up Shop!," featuring RMU student and Nak'd Thread founder, Rachel Swartz. Nak'd Thread reintroduces the vintage flare of denim fashion, featuring clothing and accessories for both men and women. Meet venture founder, learn more about RMU entrepreneurship and MCEI's exciting fall calendar, and check out Nak'd Thread's high-fashion denim merchandise on the 3rd Floor of Nicholson. The showcase takes place Oct. 26 from noon - 7 p.m.  
  • All are invited to attend the upcoming network reception and presentation titled, “Medical Errors: America’s #3 Leading Cause of Death. What Is The Solution?” hosted by RMU’s health services administration program. The program takes place Monday, October 29 in Yorktown Hall and includes a keynote address from Karen Wolk Feinstein, president and CEO of the Jewish Healthcare Foundation/Pittsburgh Regional Healthcare Initiative, and a viewing of patient safety film, “To Err is Human.”
  • RMU’s annual Creepy Conference will take place October 30 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Wheatley Center Atrium. A panel will be exploring American Horror stories and everyday examples of the gothic, from witches to serial killers to death at Disney World. Following the panel is a dramatic reading of John Lawson's one-act play, Patrimony, directed by Barbara Burgess-Lefebvre.
  • The 4th Annual Girls & Women in Sport Symposium is scheduled for Thursday, November 8th. Dr. Chery Cooky (Purdue University) will give the keynote address based on her longitudinal research on sport media, "Sidelined: Sexism in Sport Media." The keynote address will be followed by a panel discussion on Women in Sport Leadership. The Symposium is presented by the School of Education and Social Sciences, and is co-sponsored by the the Department of Athletics, the Office of Diversity & Inclusion, the Department of Sport Management, and the Women's Leadership & Mentorship Program.
