The RMU Center For Innovation & Outreach is offering a series of three immersive college experiences for Pittsburgh Public School Students; the second such event was held Saturday, February 19. Sixty middle and high school students involved with Sewickley Academy's Breakthrough Pittsburgh visited RMU CIO and the Math Department. Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer Anthony Robins along with RMU math faculty Dave Hudak and Christopher Groendyke, offered an introduction into hands-on data science concepts. Students also went to an RMU panel discussion where undergraduate representatives discussed everything RMU has to offer. High school students asked questions about what life is like at RMU: from information about classes through cafeteria offerings and club opportunities. This collaboration is dedicated to creating a community of students that have access to programs and resources that enrich their knowledge, experiences, and skills. These students are highly motivated, college bound (most are the first in their families to do so) students that are ideal to build the RMU pipeline.

Senior forward Kahliel Spear of the RMU men's basketball team was named to the 2021-22 Academic All-District® Team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Spear is the first RMU student-athlete to earn District 2 honors since former forward Aaron Thomas (2000-04) during the 2002-03 campaign. Spear will now advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America® ballot for national recognition, with honorees announced in March. CoSIDA's District 2 includes student-athletes that compete for institutions from the states of Delaware, Kentucky, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and West Virginia as well as the District of Columbia. One of two Colonials to start each of RMU's 26 games so far during the 2021-22 campaign, Spear, a native of The Colony, Texas, owns a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.92 as an economics major. Read more here.
And, just in time for this issue, we learned that Kahliel also was named to the Horizon League Academic Team. To earn this distinction, a student-athlete must own a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.20 on a 4.00 scale, participate in 50 percent of a program's competitions and have spent at least one academic year at their respective institution. Faculty athletic representatives of the Horizon League vote on the five-man team. Ties are not broken, and student-athletes that earn at least 25 percent of the votes but are not part of the #HLMBB All-Academic Team earn honorable mention status. Read more here.
