  • Reed Hastings, founder and co-CEO of Netflix, will give $3 million to Robert Morris University to fund 20 full scholarships -- including room, board, and textbooks -- beginning with students entering the university in the fall of 2021. Read more here.

  • Chris Groendyke, director of the Actuarial Science Program, is coordinating efforts with the Actuarial Foundation in helping to recruit student volunteers for Math Motivators. The goal of Math Motivators is to close the opportunity gap to, in turn, close the achievement gap by using a volunteer-driven math tutoring program that pairs underserved middle and high school students with actuarial professionals and college students with strong mathematics backgrounds.

RMU student and Math Motivators Coordinator Megan McClymonds has been actively involved in this virtual tutoring program. Math Motivators is working with students from underserved schools on a 1-on-1 or 2-on-1 basis. With the pandemic, the need for math tutoring is even more important within these communities. Students receiving tutoring from the Math Motivators program significantly outperformed students not receiving any tutoring. For example, students receiving tutoring in one Hartford school saw their test scores improve to 45% over the benchmark.

RMU Math Motivators are looking for current ASCI, SPA and other math majors to volunteer for this exciting opportunity! SET credits will be awarded to students along with t-shirts, gift cards, and valuable networking opportunities. Students who are interested or would like more information can visit the Center for Outreach and Innovation website for sign up details.
