Personal Mention

  • David Ausman, director for the Center for Veterans and Military Families, was the guest speaker at the McMurray Rotary Club earlier this month and was touted in The Almanac South Hills Community News. Ausman served in the U.S. Marine Corps, including two tours of duty in Somalia, and now helps RMU student veterans transition to college life.  
  • Maria Kalevitch, dean of the School of Engineering, Mathematics and Science and associate provost for innovation and academic outreach, has been appointed to the Liftoff PGH Advisory Committee. Liftoff PGH is a program founded by the Jewish Healthcare Foundation and is both an event and ongoing process that will bring together key stakeholders to move our region to a new space and position itself strategically as a frontier for healthcare innovation.
  • Neha Pandit, assistant professor of psychology, was published in Counseling Today, a publication of the American Counseling Association. Her article is titled "Understanding the gap: Encouraging grad students to work with an aging population" and can be read here. Pandit has more than 15 years of clinical experience and is currently working at a practice in Wexford. 
  • Justin DePlato's article titled, "The Founders Warned Us: Electoral College Protects Against ‘Overbearing Majority’" can be found on cnsnews.com. DePlato is an assistant professor of political science and is an expert in the American Presidency, Constitutionalism and the American Founders.
  • Yasmin Purohit, professor of human resources management, has been chosen to be a speaker for Vibrant Pittsburgh's upcoming Regional Economic Inclusion Summit on Sept. 25.

  • The Honors Program, Center for Global Engagement ,and the English Department are bringing Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Peter Balakian to campus Sept. 18-19. Balakian's memoir, Black Dog of Fate, was the Honors Summer Read this year. His poetry collection Ozone Journal won the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Poetry. He is also the director of Colgate University's Center for Ethics and World Societies.

  • The Massey Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation invites interested faculty and students to attend the annual Thrival Innovation Summit on Sept. 18-20. Thrival is one of Pittsburgh's premier conferences on Innovation, featuring iconic speakers and panels on forward-thinking topics that will shape the way we live and thrive. The Massey Center is excited to cover the cost of the conference pass and transportation for a selected number of students and faculty/staff participants.   • The annual fall blood drive takes place Sept. 24 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Gus Krop Gym (John Jay Center). Walk-ins are welcome but if you want to make an appointment please email Donna Anderson at andersond@rmu.edu with your cell phone number (required for online registration) and your preferred time. The entire donation process should take no more than one hour.  

  • The 12th Annual Creepy Conference is creeping up on us. All faculty, staff, and students are invited to attend and present. A one-page description of your presentation should be emailed to Sylvia Pamboukian at pamboukian@rmu.edu by midnight on Sept. 27. Selected ideas will be presented at the conference on Oct. 29 at the Wheatley Atrium. Ideas can be about any creepy topic: serial killers, UFOs, ghosts, hauntings, monsters etc. or they can debunk the supernatural.
